Chapter 11

A Passage to India

We were all incredibly relieved when Alex was at last evicted. However, Kate was left bemused and bewildered. Yes, she had noticed Alex ogling the ladyboys on their Thai honeymoon and sometimes actually flirting with them, but ITV2 had been making a three-part special about the preparation, the wedding, and the honeymoon. Filming is always frenetic and stressful and so – as ever – there had rarely been time to pause for reflection about what was actually going on in real life, as opposed to in front of the cameras. The lawyers procrastinated about a financial settlement for Alex but whatever they came up with was a price worth paying to get shot of this man. The real cost would be the harm to Kate’s reputation when the inevitable kiss-and-tell stories were sold to the highest bidder and the narrative would be manipulated to portray another innocent male victim of the villainous Kate.

Kate put on a brave face for the world but, as her mum, I saw how cut up she was about the collapse of her second marriage. Deep down she was really hurting and blamed herself even though it wasn’t her fault that she couldn’t cope with Alex’s behaviour. She realized that, in her desperation to create a family unit, she had once again fallen too easily and too quickly in love on the rebound. Does she confuse lust with love, I wonder? With her trademark warrior spirit, Kate set about rebuilding her world and began by buying a house just outside Horsham. It had five bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lovely kitchen, with a substantial stable block with horse walker, shower facilities and hair drier for the horses, as well as a sand school and land ideal for grazing. It was exactly what she had been looking for.

The house was just the right size and Kate decorated it to put her personal stamp on it. She transformed the double garage into a cinema room, adorned with sumptuous purple velvet, and created a large, homely kitchen, a snug lounge and a playroom. She also built a three-bedroom log cabin where the nannies could stay when they were working, which she had in mind to extend for an annexe for Harvey later on. There was a separate block which Kate turned into a gym, and I had an office above it. The place had complete privacy; it was a beautiful country home and I felt hopeful she would settle there and find some peace.

At this time, Kate told me that no longer would she allow her heart to rule her head or allow herself to be frustrated by relationships and misrepresentation in the press. She was determined to create her own Pete- and Alex-free paradise and escape from relationship depression. She wanted to enjoy being single and concentrate on her children and her work. However, Kate is a very sociable and convivial person. She needs to immerse herself in company, so she soon became surrounded by so-called friends.
